Museum Guests

The Elgin County Railway Museum is very pleased to welcome another railway orientated organization that shares our facilities.

The Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society

The Southern Ontario Locomotive Restoration Society has been a resident of the Museum since 1993 and are dedicated to restoring and operating vintage railway equipment.  The first and current focus of their efforts is former Essex Terminal Railway 0-6-0 steam locomotive no. 9. Essex Terminal no.9 After arriving to St. Thomas in hundreds of pieces in late 1993, it was restored to operating condition.  On October 2, 1997, No. 9 ran under its own power for the first time since its retirement in 1963.

Since the summer of 1998, the 1923 built locomotive has been a major part of the Elgin County Railway Museum's Nostalgia and Heritage Days shows.  The Society also hosts a number of other operating days throughout the summer giving steam train rides in the Canada Southern yard next to the Museum.
